2015 marks the 50th anniversary of jazz legend John Coltrane's seminal album, A Love Supreme. Coltrane presented it as a spiritual declaration that his musical devotion was now intertwined with his religious faith. In many ways, the album mirrors Coltrane's spiritual quest which grew out of his personal troubles, including a long struggle with substance abuse.
To mark the anniversary, Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts has commissioned the Campbell Brothers, whose unique Sacred Steel gospel music was created in the African-American churches, to revisit the work on their signature slide guitars and with particular attention to its transcendent spiritual message. The world premiere of this work is scheduled for August 2014 at the Lincoln Center, after which the project is available worldwide.
The Campbell Brothers play Sacred Steel gospel music, built around the propulsive sound of two steel guitars, including that of Chuck Campbell, recipient of the National Heritage Fellowship. This unique musical form of has recently emerged from the Keith Dominion church to the concert stage, with the Campbell Brothers perhaps its foremost practitioners.
