What a difference a synth makes. On Lilly Hiatt's 2013 debut, Let Down, her feathery twang sat squarely out front of her gristly alt-country band, the Dropped Ponies. That's pretty much the way you'd expect a roots-informed singer-songwriter to be showcased on record — straightforwardly. But her follow-up, Royal Blue, is mixed more like an early '90s Mazzy Star album, her vocals partially submerged in an sharp haze of guitar and synthesizer reverb. If the dream pop-ification of song-centric indie-country fare sounds like the makings of a mess, the new textures actually help clarify Hiatt's artistic identity in compelling ways.
From her deliberate sonic remove, the singer mounts an interrogation of intimacy in a dozen parts. On "Far Away," one protagonist levels with a former lover about how their closeness really felt like isolation. On "Too Bad," another refuses to let a heartbroken friend harbor any illusions that suffering loudly for the loss of love will give her something to hold onto. A third prays for her ex's smallest daily habits to be haunted by her memory on "Your Choice." Then there's the withering wit of the woman who's fled a man turned cold by religion in the hooky country-rocker "Jesus Would've Let Me Pick the Restaurant."
This is Hiatt's second album on Athens, Ga., Label Normaltown Records, an imprint of New West, the Americana label to which her celebrated songwriter dad, John Hiatt, is signed. Over the past couple years, father and daughter have occasionally performed together side by side, and the elder Hiatt would probably agree that the younger's standing on her own two feet — alluringly sullen, shrewd and sharp.
