Lightning tangled in his guitar strings – Brazil’s Yamandu Costa in Seattle for one night only at the Triple Door.
Baptized in the musical headwaters of Brazil and Argentina, Yamandu fully deserves his beautiful name which in "tupi-guarani", the language of indigenous Brazilians, means "the precursor of the waters of the world". Recognized for both his deep cultural roots and modern approach to the 7-string guitar, Yamandu will enchant you with supple interpretations of classic Tango, Samba, and Choro as well as his own emotive compositions. Already well-known to audiences in South America, Europe, Japan, Africa, and the Caribbean, this is Yamandu's first visit to Seattle, and a rare opportunity to see a brilliant player and composer at the height of his powers.
“Brazilian guitarist Yamandú Costa attacks the nylon strings of his guitar with a demonic playfulness. The fingers of his left hand trace lightning riffs, pausing briefly to block out full chords as they range up and down the neck with effortless zeal. His body tenses with a kind of exhilaration. His head tilts back, then sideways; his eyes close, then open, wide as moons; his legs cross and uncross, then stretch out before him—as though he and his instrument were both being played by some virtuosic sprite, and he were merely an amazed observer. The music is as technical as the most challenging classical repertoire, but the rhythms bounce and glide along with the vigor of dance grooves from some charmed, imaginary land.” Guitar Player Magazine
