“Ed was voted #1 Rising Star Male Vocalist in the 2014 DownBeat critics’ poll. What makes that particularly amazing is that he’s 87 years old. Seriously. He learned jazz harmony from Charles Mingus, who used to hang out at his sister’s house across the street, when they were growing up in Watts in the 1940s. He was a vocalist for the famous Warden’s Jazz Band at San Quentin with Art Pepper & Frank Morgan in the 1960s. Ed recorded the first of his four critically acclaimed albums at age 77. Last year he had a sold out weekend at Tula’s for the Earshot festival and four months ago he had six sold out shows at Dizzy’s (Jazz at Lincoln Center) with famed pianist George Cables. His story of addiction, incarceration, recovery and redemption is a tribute to the power of the human spirit.”
